Clinigen healthcare - case study
Situation
- Foscavir® (foscarnet sodium), an antiviral medication, was launched globally by AstraZeneca in the late 1980s to treat HIV/AIDS-related cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections and herpes
- Foscavir® had not been promoted for over a decade and was a declining asset with costly Regulatory maintenance and Manufacturing concerns
- The number of markets holding a Marketing Authorization was declining as licences lapsed and Foscavir® no longer fitted the AstraZeneca product portfolio
- AstraZeneca wanted to divest Foscavir® as a non-core asset while ensuring an uninterrupted global supply for patients and physicians, so Clinigen acquired the global rights to Foscavir® in March 2010
The Clinigen Healthcare Solution
Clinigen is very aware of the concerns of the divesting company – they want their product to go to a good home and the process to be trouble free.
With Foscavir® Clinigen managed the transition of ownership in strategic tranches. This secured support from all concerned stakeholders and minimised concerns.
- Clinigen managed a smooth transfer of the manufacture of Foscavir® to external suppliers and changed manufacturer in Japan
- Our logistics expertise ensured there were no stock outs
- The Clinigen customer care team ensured that hospitals and pharmacists could always receive Foscavir® when they needed it
- Clinigen contacted Key Opinion Leaders to advise them in advance about the transfer of ownership and to address their concerns proactively
- Clinigen managed transfer of Marketing Authorizations across 16 markets efficiently
- Clinigen actively engaged with AstraZeneca affiliates and local Authorities to ensure a smooth handover of ownership at a local level
Clinigen has increased the sales and value of Foscavir® through a strategically implemented plan and structured process. AstraZeneca successfully divested a product that no longer fitted within the portfolio. Clinigen intends to secure further indications for Foscavir® adding greater value. Physicians and patients remain happy as they can still obtain an important medication, Foscavir®.
